Feltwool: gives wool a second life

Feltwool is a high-quality upholstery fabric with a generous proportion of recycled wool. Felting adds a compact and supple texture to the warm softness of wool. The rich blend of colours is created by sophisticated sorting of the recycled scraps. Thanks to Feltwool, old clothing, cut-offs and production remnants do not end up in a landfill, but gain new value as versatile, long-lasting furniture fabric.

Second life with first-class quality

Wool is a renewable material that De Ploeg loves working with because of its natural appeal. Recycling pure wool for use in furniture fabrics is challenging because the fibres shorten when processed. Felting solves this problem. The fibres hook into each other, giving the material renewed strength. Furthermore, the addition of small amounts of longer polyester and polyamide fibres provides cohesion and resilience.

In this way, De Ploeg facilitates sustainability and resource savings without compromising on quality and comfort.

Colour as a legacy

Feltwool comes in 29 timeless interior colours. The fabric derives its colour not from a dye bath, but from the sorting and blending of recovered fibres. As a result, the fabric is never completely plain, but shows a rich blend of shades. Skipping the dyeing process enables us to reduce the use of dyes and water.

The transformation, step by step

  • Shredded or torn textiles are sorted by colour and composition.
  • The fibres are mixed, carded and spun into a yarn containing 70% wool.
  • After inspection, the new yarns are woven into a supple fabric.
  • The fabric is felted with water, heat and friction.

Guaranteed responsible

Feltwool meets all the requirements of the international Global Recycle Standard certificate for responsible manufacturing and traceable sourcing of recycled materials.

Reborn to last again

Feltwool does not deny its origins. Like virgin wool, it is flame-retardant, self-cleaning and soundproofing. The fabric is extremely hard-wearing due to the felting technique. (Martindale 90,000 and Pilling 3-4 out of 5). This makes Feltwool ideally suited for projects.
